Why Are Gen Z Teens Trading Smartphones for Dumbphones?
This trend has caught the attention of tech writers, psychologists, and even marketers: more Gen Z teens are intentionally ditching smartphones in favor of basic, no-frills “dumbphones.” But this isn’t about retro aesthetics or rejecting modern life. It’s about reclaiming time, attention, and mental clarity in a world that’s constantly buzzing.
As one Light Phone user shared, switching helped them reduce screen time from hours a day to just 20 minutes—freeing up time for hobbies, real-world conversations, and better sleep. Another buyer said:
“I was tired of doomscrolling. I wanted to be bored again, on purpose.”
The movement is growing. According to ExpressVPN data, nearly half of Gen Z is actively trying to limit screen time, using tools like app blockers or completely switching to feature phones. Companies like DumbWireless and Light Phone are stepping in, offering sleek, minimalist devices for people who crave connection—without the noise.
And while some parents and peers are surprised to see a teen carrying a flip phone in 2025, many of these young users say the benefits are real: less social comparison, more mindfulness, and fewer distractions. For a generation often labeled as “screen-addicted,” this shift signals something deeper—a desire to feel more in control of their attention and emotional health.
What Do You Think?
Would you—or your child—consider switching to a dumbphone, even temporarily? Is it possible that less connection is the key to feeling more present? Whether you’ve tried digital detoxing or just feel overstimulated by screen time, we’d love to hear your take. What would it take for you to unplug?
